Way back in the annals of history that was 2005, I was shown a magical showreel that cemented my path as a motion designer. My teacher Joe Raffa shared with the class just how far you could push the motion image in the commercial world.
I never thought that I’d be in their studio, but that all changed last Thursday, July 14th. It was a game changer.
Not very often do you get the opportunity to meet the people have profoundly inspired you. What was only to be a 30 minute hello, turned into a 2 hour conversation. From the history of Onesize, to the latest experiments they were making, this team oozes innovation and creativity. It’s clear that the counter intuitive works. What I mean is that they spend a significant amount of their design time interating, experimenting, and failing, until they find the right solution for the project.
My experience so far, is that all those theories and practices design schools teach, the “real world” quickly sacrifices for monetisation. They are too worried about billable time and stake holders forbid, they should have an idea or two flop. Onesize is one of those rare places that takes “as much time as needed to sculpt and mold the project, until the job is done.” True design puritists. Funny thing too, they happen to make the stuff other designers use for inspiration. It’s also paying the bills.
Visiting Onesize set the personal bar. I will return to work with this amazing pool of talent. I just need to roll up the sleeves and work my ass off. As their team revealed: “The secret to Fredrik’s (one of their interns turned freelancers) success is that he never slept.”
