I proudly present to you my final project while at VFS. I wanted to create a theoretical youth oriented sub brand for the TED talks. It was designed to attract 20 to 30 somethings that have never been exposed to the TED talks, to inspire them into changing their world and join the TED community. I love the TED talks. They have inspired my friends and I to be more than we are. I was lucky enough to have Ze Frank and Mark Busse as my advisors for 4 months. We spend almost 500 hours developing the brand and its execution as a network identity. The challenge was to create a brand that had the flavor and essence of the greater TED brand, but had it’s own voice that was young and fresh. Check out the case study and brand style guide

A modern interpretation of Mark Twains “The Prince and the Pauper”. The challenge was to create a title sequence that played with contrasts. Starting as one thing and becoming something else. I really love the straight edge shave and wanted to incorporate that idea into the title sequence. The idea works well, because it can seem sinister and appear to be an interrogation scene. I wanted the audience to feel on edge and unsettled, using close up shots and blue green, high contrast light.

What an amazing year. By far my favorite. I’ve met so many cool people all over the world. I’ve been lucky enough to work with amazing talent in London and completely fell in love with the city. In the spirit of nostalgia, I present to you true believers, my favorite motion pieces of the year. The cream of the crop.

Woodkid – Iron.

Absolutely my favorite music video….possibly ever. Slow mo symbolism and symphony. Noice.

Year Zero – OFFF Barcelona.

Director Mischa Rozema has been incredibly transparent about this title sequence disguised as a short film. Read the Director’s notes after watching this one. A bar has been made with this one.

Chiller Rebrand

It’s not often I find a great station rebrand ( I can count them on one hand) and Onesize (my dream studio) nailed this one.

http://www.onesize.nl/projects/Chiller-Rebranding

http://www.onesize.nl/projects/Chiller-Rebranding-2

Countdown

The craftsmanship and TIME put into this piece by Céline Desrumaux is staggering. There’s something to enjoy in every frame she lovingly created. I love the idea of space travel and humanity exploring the stars and the timing of this video couldn’t have been better. Today with private enterprise looking to the stars and NASA’s backing off with sending humans into space, makes the message all the more powerful.

Metronomy – The Bay

I’m a huge fan of Director David Wilson. I had the pleasure of meeting him this year at the Playgrounds Festival in the Netherlands. He just can’t keep still! There’s too much creative energy blasting out of this guy and the gigantic body of work he’s made this year alone is a testament to that. Check out his making of pieces as well!

Eye of the Storm – Lovett

Clearly, I love cinematic based projects and this one is no different. This is a close second to best music video of the year.

Mac ‘n’ Cheese

A student short. Lemme say that again, a STUDENT short. I was wildly entertained…and intimidated. These guys are going far.

Is Tropical – The Greeks

Basically a 100% true renactment of my childhood. My inner child squealed with joy while watching this.

Fredrik Ekholm – Showreel 2011

This guy gets the gold star for my favorite showreel. I have a strange addiction to showreels. They act like shots of inspiration and motivation straight to the vein. Fredrick’s gave me heart palpatations.

Sky Better Effect 2.0

Last but not least (aaaand a heartless plug) this was a blast to make with the team at Neon.

So what are your favorites?

This was my first national broadcast project and a watershed moment in my career. There’s something to be said about seeing your work pop up on the tele. Like the first time you see your work up on a billboard. It feels tangible. Real.

Working with Neon has been a real treat. Their process is one of constant experimentation, iteration, and preempted decisions that kept us above water and away from the often chaotic final stretch many creatives feel as a project wraps up.

I learned a lot of really cool techniques and processes for Cinema 4D. Ben Young, a Neon designer/ 3d wizard was a huge help as we explored different solutions for the 3d component of the spot.

Overall, I had the privilege of working with a A-class team and look forward to doing it again in the near future.

Keep calm and carry on

Neon.

This place is great! It’s a studio with some old school talent that’s quietly making some big ripples. Like every other studio in London, I showed up at their doorstep and introduced myself. Tom hooked me up with great gig…which lead to me spending over 2 months with these guys.

Tom, Roland, Charlie, Lauren, Ben, Chris, Paul, and Nigel. We experimented, shared personal projects we worked on, talked shop, shared music, jokes and compared British sayings with Canadian. I loved every second of it.

The three Directors Tom, Charlie, and Roland have been working together for quite sometime now, already having started a successful studio in London. It became too big so they started Neon. I love that. The fact that they know they can start something new, while staying true to the craft. I’ve learned a lot here. More than any other place I’ve worked at to date. They have high expectations, know the lay of the land, and gave this ambitious Canuck a chance to play in their sandbox.

The inspiration has been in high gear. I always dreamed of finding a studio where I can shared the latest personal projects, and problem solve tech issues. So as this latest project wraps up (I can’t wait to show it off) I look forward to the next ambitious undertaking.

I really hope that this style of studio is the status quo. If it is, I found my place.

Heads up for some new experiments on the horizon.

Way back in the annals of history that was 2005, I was shown a magical showreel that cemented my path as a motion designer. My teacher Joe Raffa shared with the class just how far you could push the motion image in the commercial world.

I never thought that I’d be in their studio, but that all changed last Thursday, July 14th. It was a game changer.

Not very often do you get the opportunity to meet the people have profoundly inspired you. What was only to be a 30 minute hello, turned into a 2 hour conversation. From the history of Onesize, to the latest experiments they were making, this team oozes innovation and creativity. It’s clear that the counter intuitive works. What I mean is that they spend a significant amount of their design time interating, experimenting, and failing, until they find the right solution for the project.

My experience so far, is that all those theories and practices design schools teach, the “real world” quickly sacrifices for monetisation. They are too worried about billable time and stake holders forbid, they should have an idea or two flop. Onesize is one of those rare places that takes “as much time as needed to sculpt and mold the project, until the job is done.” True design puritists. Funny thing too, they happen to make the stuff other designers use for inspiration. It’s also paying the bills.

I will return to work with this amazing pool of talent. I just need to roll up the sleeves and work my ass off. As their team revealed: “The secret to Fredrik’s (one of their interns turned freelancers) success is that he never slept.”
